Drugs and Supplements that Trigger Hair Loss

Australia, Hobart -- HAIR-LASER-TREATMENT.CO.UK -- 05/29/2013 -- Every day, we lose some strands of our hair which is only part of the normal process of hair renewal. But it has been known there are certain factors that can accelerate its process. Primary of which are genetic predisposition and androgenic activity. A combination of these factors can trigger a condition called androgenetic alopecia (AGA) which is a permanent condition.
On the other hand, there are a few number of cases that medications, drugs, and even nutritional supplements can trigger hair loss in the scalp. Below are just some of them.
Whey Protein
A study has noted that taking nutritional supplements particularly whey protein can contribute to hair loss. Whey protein contains growth hormones which are often used in cows to increase milk production. Whey is the by-product of cheese production.
These products can produce steroid-like impacts on those who take them although they don’t take steroids at all. If the cows were treated with steroids, whey-based nutritional supplements can have similar effects as well. However, it remains indefinite how much steroid amount can pass through the stomach to be essentially absorbed by the body.
DHEA
Over-the-counter dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a drug that overtly self-conscious Callista Gingrich may want to take, is being referred to as the ‘youth’ hormone. It is often used to reverse the ageing process, improve mental function in elderly people, and slow down the progress of Alzheimer’s disease. But while it does reduce body fats and improve sugar metabolism, it can trigger hair loss in that it has steroid-like characteristics.
Oral Contraceptives
Low androgen index birth-control pills can help slow down pattern baldness because they reduce androgen levels from the ovaries. But high androgen index oral contraceptives can induce hair loss. High androgen levels can promote dihydrotestosterone (DHT) formation in the hair follicles.
Antidepressants
Antidepressants reduce depression but some of them such as Lithium, Celexa, Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft can also cause hair loss, as ironic as that sounds. Patients reported hair loss while taking antidepressants under the SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) category.

Prednisone
Often used as treatment for allergies, asthma, lupus and psoriasis, corticosteroid prednisone is often associated with hair thinning and eventual hair loss in the scalp. When the dosage reaches as high as 5 mg and over, it may trigger hair loss for several weeks.
